Background of the Study
Gender-sensitive electoral policies are designed to ensure that women have equal access to political participation and are adequately represented in political processes (Okoro & Sulaimon, 2023). In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, such policies have the potential to address the underrepresentation of women in local government elections and ensure that gender equality is mainstreamed in political practices (Ibrahim & Bawa, 2024). However, despite the existence of some gender-focused policies, women’s political participation remains limited due to sociocultural barriers, political discrimination, and a lack of enforcement mechanisms (Abubakar & Umar, 2025). This study seeks to examine the role of gender-sensitive electoral policies in enhancing women’s political participation and representation in Kano Municipal, evaluating both the strengths and weaknesses of these policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although gender-sensitive electoral policies have been implemented at various levels of government, their impact in Kano Municipal Local Government Area has been minimal. Women’s underrepresentation in local governance persists, indicating that these policies may not be effectively enforced or may not address the specific barriers women face (Rashid & Usman, 2023). This study will examine the role of gender-sensitive electoral policies in Kano Municipal, identifying the challenges to their successful implementation and their impact on women’s participation in local government elections.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

To evaluate the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral policies in Kano Municipal Local Government Area.

To assess the barriers women face in participating in elections despite the presence of gender-sensitive policies.

To propose recommendations for improving the implementation of gender-sensitive electoral policies in Kano Municipal.

How effective have gender-sensitive electoral policies been in increasing women’s political participation in Kano Municipal Local Government Area?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

Gender-sensitive electoral policies have a positive impact on women’s political participation in Kano Municipal.

Sociocultural barriers significantly undermine the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral policies.

The improvement of gender-sensitive electoral policies will lead to increased political participation of women in Kano Municipal.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the challenges and successes of gender-sensitive electoral policies in Kano Municipal, offering valuable recommendations for policymakers and electoral bodies seeking to promote gender equality in local governance.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kano Municipal Local Government Area, specifically evaluating the role and impact of gender-sensitive electoral policies on women’s political participation. Limitations include challenges in obtaining data from electoral bodies and potential biases in reporting on policy implementation.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
